A documentary film made about Football Fans by Football Fans, for Football Fans
This film is a story about the fans who support Newcastle United Football Club.
It’s an opportunity to show the World how passionate the fans of Newcastle United are, what football in the city of Newcastle Upon Tyne is all about and what Newcastle United means to the hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide who support this football club.
Association Football is the national sport in England where the first modern set of rules for the code were established in 1863, which were a major influence on the development of the modern Laws of the Game.
With over 40,000 association football clubs, England has more clubs involved in the code than any other country. The professional game consists of the 72 clubs that form the Football league and the 20 clubs that form the elite Premier League and to which the 72 Football League clubs aspire to join.
Newcastle United is a unique club in that pyramid of English football. Once one of the game's most successful clubs in the early 20th century they were one of the dominant forces in English football they were league winners four times between 1905 and 1927. They reached the FA cup final ten times between 1905 and 1955, winning it on six occasions. Lean times were interrupted when in 1969 the Inter Cities Fairs Cup; the precursor to the UEFA Cup and Europa League.
In the early 1990’s under the management of Kevin Keegan the clubs resurgence began and under Keegan Newcastle United became everyone’s second club; coining the phrase the Entertainers for Keegan’s style of football. Under Rafa Benitez; the city seems galvanised again. The buzz is back and there is definitely a feel that with such a successful manager at the helm, Newcastle United can once again find a level of entertaining and exciting football.
The Premier League is the most-watched football league in the world, broadcast in 212 territories to 643 million homes and a potential TV audience of 4.7 billion people.
The Championship is the wealthiest non-top flight football division in the world and the seventh richest division in Europe.
The interest in football worldwide and on English league football in particular is massive. The overseas television rights for coverage of the premier league for the three seasons 2016 to 2019 amounts to over £3bn on top of the £5.1bn for UK television rights.
Newcastle United were relegated from the premier league at the end of the 2015/16 season yet the fans have responded not by walking away but by showing their devotion with record season ticket sales and an optimism that belies the norm. Over 33,000 season tickets have been sold and the stadium is destined to be full to its capacity of 52,338.
This film will shadow those supporters on their season long journey following the club; a journey that will see them cover over 9,700 miles across the length and breath of the country. The reward for the fans will be seen as the clubs return to the top flight of English football. The reward for the club will be a promotion worth £150m, a return to the top flight of English football and a chance to build success for this great sporting institution.
The story of the forthcoming season is there to be told and we plan to be there to document that story from the fans eye.; show the passion and the emotion; the thrills, excitement and yes, the disappointments along the way. We will be bringing together the story of the travelling fan, the armchair fan, the expat, the pensioner, the school child and yes,the fanatical. we will chronicle on their trials and tribulations in their own words; through their own eyes and their own voices. There is a saying on Tyneside that wherever you go in the world, your sure to find a Geordie; a Newcastle United supporter.
